अमानित्वमदम्भित्वमहिंसा क्षान्तिरार्जवम् । आचार्योपासनं शौचं स्थैर्यमात्मविनिग्रहः

amānitvamadambhitvamahiṃsā kṣāntirārjavam | ācāryopāsanaṃ śaucaṃ sthairyamātmavinigrahaḥ

Śaṅkarācārya's commentary

Humility: absence of self-esteem. Modesty: not proclaiming one's own virtues. Innocence: doing no injury to any living being. Patience: not being affected when others have done any injury. Service of the teacher: doing acts of service to the preceptor (ācārya) who teaches the means of attaining mokṣa. Purity: external washing by water and earths, and inner purity of mind consisting in the removal from it of attachment and other passions. Steadfastness: concentration of all efforts exclusively in the path of salvation. Self-control: control of the body and the senses by directing them exclusively to the right path.
