मनः प्रसादः सौम्यत्वं मौनमात्मविनिग्रहः । भावसंशुद्धिरित्येतत्तपो मानसमुच्यते

manaḥ prasādaḥ saumyatvaṃ maunamātmavinigrahaḥ | bhāvasaṃśuddhirityetattapo mānasamucyate

Translation

Serenity of mind, good-heartedness, silence, self-control, purity of nature — this is called the mental austerity.

Śaṅkarācārya's commentary

Good-heartedness: the state of mind which may be inferred from its effects, such as the brightness of the face. Silence: even silence in speech is necessarily preceded by a control of thought, and thus the effect is here put for the cause, viz., the control of thought. Self-control: a general control of the mind. This is to be distinguished from silence (mauna) which means the control of thought so far as it concerns speech. Purity of nature: honesty of purpose in dealings with other people.
