Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 18, Verse 1

अर्जुन उवाच । संन्यासस्य महाबाहो तत्त्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम् । त्यागस्य च हृषीकेश पृथक्केशिनिषूदन

arjuna uvāca | saṃnyāsasya mahābāho tattvamicchāmi veditum | tyāgasya ca hṛṣīkeśa pṛthakkeśiniṣūdana

Translation

Of 'saṃnyāsa,' O Mighty-armed, I desire to know the truth, O Hṛṣīkeśa, as also of 'tyāga,' severally, O Slayer of Keśin.

Śaṅkarācārya's commentary

"Saṃnyāsa": the connotation of the term. "Tyāga": the connotation of the term. "Severally": as distinguished from each other. Keśin was an Asura whom the Lord slew, and the Lord is therefore addressed as 'Keśi-niṣūdana,' the Slayer of Keśin. The words have been used here and there in the preceding discourses, their connotations however not being clearly distinguished.
